The Westminster School, based in Dudley undertook the HugglePetsCIC Animal Assisted Activities Programme to help improve the wellbeing of their pupils. The Animal Assisted Activities six week programme is designed to align with the Mental Health curriculum for schools, and covers topics such as basic emotions, healthy eating, exercise, self esteem and confidence building. Below are comments from the school and HugglePetsCIC Mental Health First Aider/SEN Activities Coordinator.

Meet Chelsea

Chelsea was put forward to HugglePetsCIC via the school as they thought that she would benefit from the programme to improve her wellbeing, meeting the animals and building new friendships within the group. Here is the feedback from both her Class Teacher and the HugglePetsCIC SEN Activities Coordinator.

While Chelsea was at HugglePets, we have seen a very happy Chelsea! She always looks forward to coming, she has been a lot calmer and engaged. She has been vocal and very helpful.

Feedback from the SEN Activities Coordinator include:

Chelsea seemed a little unsettled at first in the new environment. However, Chelsea built a lovely relationship with HugglePets staff where she felt comfortable to communicate her needs so the session would be enjoyable for her. Chelsea showed some amazing resilience by trying to feed a bearded dragon a live locust and holding a cockroach.

Meet Jacob

Jacob was referred to our programme via the school as he was struggling with anxiety and they thought that he would benefit from the programme to improve her wellbeing, meeting the animals and building his confidence. Here is the feedback from both his Class Teacher and the HugglePetsCIC SEN Activities Coordinator.

Jacob has definitely enjoyed coming to HugglePets every week and has always got a smile on his face. Jacob has come out of his shell and has been more vocal at HugglePets and School.

Feedback from the SEN Activities Coordinator include:

At first, Jacob was very quiet and would communicate by typing on his phone. By the end of the programme Jacob was actively bringing himself to me so he could tell me something. He did some beautiful work and would proudly share it with me. Jacob also built a lovely friendship with another peer in the group.
