About us Our Impact Case Studies: Young People Meet Kayleigh Meet Kayleigh Kayleigh, age 15, attended our Animal Assisted Emotional Coaching 4 week programme at school to help her with her emotional regulation and behaviours. What is Animal Assisted Emotional Coaching? Emotional Coaching: Is a universal, relational approach that supports emotional regulation. Helps children recognise, label, manage and understand emotions in themselves and others. Is NOT dismissing or disapproving of emotions. Added to this, Animal Assisted Emotional Coaching is: being able to work on the above points, aided by a therapy animal to help convey the message or topic explored. Reasons for attending: Kayleigh was referred to HugglePets by her school as she was struggling with maintaining friendships and with her own confidence and resilience. Methods used: Activities to help Kayleigh identify qualities you would find in a good friend were identified to support her in finding healthy friendships in the future. Kayleigh also engaged really well with a self-esteem journal which tasked her to take part in doing one good deed for someone each day to help raise her self-esteem. Animals that helped: Millie the rabbit was very helpful for Kayleigh as she helped her to feel calm and grounded while she sat on her lap. Compliments were given to Millie to help Kayleigh practice saying nice things about herself also. Outcomes: By the end of the programme, Kayleigh was able to identify what a good friend in herself and others may look like and how friends are treated in healthy relationships. Kayleigh also appeared more confident after identifying the things she liked about herself. What activities were used: Friendship scenario cards were explored to reflect on healthy and unhealthy behaviours in a relationship. A self-esteem journal was also used to encourage the client to take responsibility of actively promoting positive self-esteem for herself once she had finished being supported by her coach on this topic. What useful tips for home/school were identified: It was identified that Kayleigh was struggling to engage with her math class because she was feeling nervous about putting her hand up to ask for help. To make this situation less stressful, it was agreed with school that she had a card that was red on one side and green on the other. Kayleigh can use this card on red when she needs support from the teacher without the rest of the class being made aware.
